by John Edward Rangel

Meet El Pocho Loco, a classic anti-hero whose burned out, skewered view of reality makes him seem weird even by East LA's notion of normalcy. His search, for what, he knows not, is seemingly detoured by a chain of events that, like so much of life in the barrios, he has no control over.

In A Chicano in Aztlan, John Edward Rangel depicts a few crazy days in the life of a few crazy people in a semi-surrealistic portrayal of Latino gang culture. We see what can happen when a little knowledge of the Chicano experience mixes with the violent, drug-addled mindset of la raza's barrio warriors. And we understand how those who survive "la vida loca" are forever changed by it.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Born in East LA in 1962, John Edward Rangel spent most of the next thirty years trying to get out. When rehab centers didn't work, he tried higher education, hoping to teach Chicano studies. Through a series of unwise decisions, he ended up a construction worker, where he found out that the hardworking blue-collar worker is truly the foundation of it all. Always in search of a moment to write and never finding enough, Rangel currently resides in the vast wastelands of the 909.
