___________________________________________________________Communications Class 101 Correctional Communications and Survival Skills: A Basic Training Book and Survival Tool in Understanding the Significance of Words, Phrases and Language Spoken by Criminal Offenders
by William F. Gaines
The reason and purpose for writing this particular book was to address some serious deficiencies I was observing teaching students enrolled in the Juvenile Core Curriculum training classes at the Sacramento Regional Public Safety Training Center. I also found this was the same identical problem in the Introduction to Corrections classes I taught at Sacramento City College Administration of Justice Department.
Therefore, to address these deficiencies I decided to write this book as a teaching and training tool to provide knowledge and a better understanding to those students and academy trainees seeking to work with criminal offenders.
It became quite evident that a large number of students were enrolling in Corrections classes with no prior exposure to a vocabulary of words, phrases and language spoken by criminal offender populations. Neither did these students possess the necessary survival skills needed working with criminal offenders.
Furthermore, the students lacked very little if any understanding about the lifestyles and social environments in which these criminal offenders grew up in. In order to understand these environments better I developed a student questionnaire to collect information about each student’s exposure to a “street like environment” prior to working in the field of Corrections.
Correctional Communications and Survival Skills will ease that transition from the academy trainee student to becoming correctional staff in acquiring a better understanding about the world of offender slang.
The book Correctional Communications and Survival Skills also known as Communications Class 101 is a basic training and teaching book. This book could be beneficial to correctional staff and be utilized with both juvenile and adult criminal offender populations.
