Cry Rape
is the international story of child abuse told in two different continents by Maureen, a little Jamaican girl who refused to be a victim.

Maureen Watson opened her eyes to a cruel and harsh existence they called “life.” She found herself in a hell of poverty and depravation. Her life was tormented by an abusive grandmother who often left the infants for weeks at a time to fend for themselves. When their grandmother stayed home, she terrorized the children’s life with slavish hard work and regular floggings. This was their normality until the children’s parents appeared on the doorstep in the middle of the night in November 1965.

The family migrates to England in 1966. The novel takes an in-depth look at the emotions and conflicts of an abused child and the destabilizing effects of migration as the family travels back and forth from Jamaica to England several times in search of a better life.

After years of assault and abuse, Maureen becomes desperate for love and attention and eventually succumbs to the pressures of her peers. She becomes involved with a young musician, but only after one encounter, she becomes pregnant and the father denies responsibility and flees. Fifteen and still in school, the horror of her condition compels her to contrive a plan.

She had been raped and abused for most of her childhood — and kept quiet. So to prevent a “murderation,” humiliation, and disgrace, Maureen decides to Cry Rape.
