First Responders
by Sara Henckel

What if highly developed, multifunctional, GPS equipped rescue robots, with long-life tracking devices, and a debris shield, had accompanied the first responders of the 9-1-1 terrorist attacks into the World Trade Center in New York? How many more lives might have been saved?

The subsequent search for survivors through the rubble only located 20 people still alive.

This story is about the catalyst that triggered the race to develop sophisticated rescue robots capable of going in first to access danger levels, put out fires, unblock exits, and locate trapped survivors. A perfect robot that does everything needed in any given emergency.

About the Author

As a retired investigative reporter, Sara Henckel knows how to gather facts and data and weave them into a “can’t stop reading” story. She follows the adage “facts make better fiction.”

Henckel’s years of working as a reporter qualify her to present facts in a fictional setting that is totally believable. She was a reporter for the Pawnee Chief (Pawnee, Oklahoma), while doing in-depth freelance pieces for the Stillwater News Press, Yale News, and Cushing Daily News, all in Oklahoma.

Henckel’s hobbies are coin, stamp, and rock collecting. She currently resides in San Jose, California.
