by Noel Linton Allen

This story is about struggle and determination. It starts the day my mother abandoned me at the doorstep of a stranger in the ghettos of Kingston, Jamaica, and recounts my mental and physical abuse at the hands of my foster father and sexual abuse by the hands of my spiritual father — a Roman Catholic priest.

It shows how I escaped the clutches of gangsters and went on a remarkable journey that led to America, where I ended up sleeping on the streets of New York City, eventually getting a job in the White House Hotel, where I worked illegally for twelve years.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I was born into abject poverty on April 9, 1944, in Jamaica, West Indies. I could have easily been an illiterate person were it not for my passion for learning. As a young man, I used to pick up literature from the garbage and read it along with a littered dictionary. It was not easy to keep focused in an environment where knocking people over their heads was preferred to beating books. But today, thank God, I am literate and have been afforded the opportunity to share my letters with you.
