by Peter R. Onedera
Gi I Tilu Grådu (In the Third Grade) is a chronological slice-of-life account of the author’s third grade class at his village elementary school. Church, childhood romance, holidays, Boy Scouts, swimming in the village’s river, picking mangoes, and a spelling bee are humorously presented with an island setting that is Guam, an unincorporated territory of the United States. The author employs the accents of the Guam Dialect of English, known as CHåt, throughout the book, adding a touch of authenticity. The blend of native culture and American influence sets the background for a delightful, charming tale of island life.
