by Pearline Fulwood-York

Growing up in the 1940s in the segregated South was challenging. But despite the test of hard times, life for this little African-American girl was full of excitement and fun.

The trip from Pearl's tin-roofed sharecroppers shack to town to her grandmother's house was fraught with danger and adventure. Nevertheless, every week they braved their fears of dark roads, hostile neighbors, and wild animals to make the miles-long journey by foot to visit her beloved grandmother. Journey with Pearl back to a time when happiness was finding a patch of morning glory buds to pop, when visiting Miss Maggie's well-stocked country store was a pure delight, and the thrill of the weekly automobile ride in the family's prize car was truly something to look forward to! This is a book for parents and grandparents to remember when - and children to remember because….

Her earliest memory is being in a big old carriage with her sleeping baby sister in a scorching-hot cotton field while her mother toiled at picking cotton. She was born at the perfect time in history, which allowed her the unique opportunity to experience both the pain and intense pleasure of life in the Deep South. She never traveled more than a few miles from her hometown of Mayesville, South Carolina, until she moved to New York City in 1963.

She currently resides in the Bronx and has spent most of her life working as a secretary. She continues to pursue new interests and old dreams. Recently she had the distinct pleasure of working in the movie American Gangster, starring Denzel Washington, as a background actress. She is the mother of three grown sons and has two granddaughters.
