by Charles H. Freeland

Not a war story in the usual sense, Hot Rock Over the Himalayas is a digest of personal experiences with people, places, and things that made a lasting impression on author Charles H. Freeland from the day Lindbergh landed in Paris to Freeland’s final flight as a pilot in World War II.

It is also the author’s endeavor to convey to this and future generations a knowledge of how basic and simple life was for his generation when compared to life in 2004.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Born in 1923, Charles H. Freeland enlisted in the Army Air Corps and became a pilot in 1943, the same year he married Lorean Poland. The couple raised two children, Douglas, a former Navy pilot, and Nancy, a nurse. His assignments included flying the “Hump” from India to China, the Battle for Burma, and flying the Red Ball Express from Casablanca to Calcutta.

Following his discharge, he became a farmer, an ordained minister, and a teacher and a principal at the elementary and secondary levels. He also taught psychology, history, and communication through media, at Shepherd University for twenty-five years. He was also a carpenter, plumber, electrician, and a stone mason.

He retired in 1988 and now enjoys three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
