by Charlotte Crandell

I Like When My Car Breaks Down
is a personal account of living with mental illness. It is a story of loneliness, despair, and triumph. It is also the story of crises and rebirth in marriage. It is a story of hope, tempered by reality.

Using actual writings to “the voices,” this book vividly portrays the workings of a delusional mind. Yet it is an individual who holds down a job and is a homeowner, wife, and mother.

Written for people who have mental illness, their families, and their friends, the author hopes to encourage people to seek effective treatment and pursue full lives.

Charlotte Crandell has struggled with mental illness for most of her life. From her brother’s diagnosis of schizophrenia when she was nine to her own diagnosis of psychotic disorder in her twenties, she has fought for some semblance of a “normal” life. She lives in Maryland with her husband, two children, and several pets.
