by Charles Jarmond

The Ladder explores the life of a fictional African American family in an urban environment. Motivated by their single mother who suffered an abusive husband, the children are encouraged to set lofty goals for themselves. Although the three children pursue successful lives, their relationships and careers are disrupted by real world circumstances, which they are not prepared for as adults, due to their dysfunctional beginnings.

To the surviving members of the family, understanding comes at a price that will define the rest of their livesÖ

Charles Jarmond was born and bred in Harlem. He holds degrees from Lehman College and St. Johnís College and studied acting at The Lee Strasberg Institute in New York. Diagnosed in early 2003 with multiple sclerosis, his sincerest ambition is to write plays and novels that will contribute to the sharing of the African American experience and, ultimately, the human experience.

Inspired by suggestions of teachers and friends to write, The Ladder is Mr. Jarmondís debut as a published novelist. It was originally written as a play and performed at the Harlem Victoria 5 Theater and favorably reviewed by the Amsterdam News in New York.
