by Michael Whelan and Nick McClung

Living in Nod is a psychological study of criminal pathology, the characters representing offenders examined during the author's employment as the Mississippi Department of Corrections' chief psychologist. But, the novel is also an analysis of the etiology of evil, asserting that psychological dysfunction cannot completely explain criminal violence perpetuated on the innocent.

As the psychiatric personnel grapple with their own emotional conflicts, the truth slowly dawns upon them: the demon Sanan-Din is the key! A spiritual resolution becomes inescapable, but will mortality therapy suffice as an antidote to demonic power?

Michael Whelan, Ph.D., and C. Nick McClung, psychiatric assistant, worked together at the Mississippi State Penitentiary for more than a decade. Dr. Whelan served as the Director of the Department of Psychiatry and supervised mental health services for mentally ill offenders. He also conducted forensic evaluations of sex offenders eligible for parole, provided expert testimony in capital murder cases, and coordinated a rehabilitation program (RID) for non-violent first offenders.

Nick McClung helped to create the treatment components for the Regimented Inmate Discipline (RID) program. He evaluated suicidal and psychotic prisoners for the psychiatry department and helped develop a pre-release program to assist inmates finishing their sentences to re-enter society adaptively.

McClung remains an employee of the Department of Corrections, while Dr. Whelan is now in private practice.
