by Mae Poser

As her dementia deepened, it became more and more difficult for Mom to care for herself and live in her own home. In October of 1987, my life, Momís life, and my cat, Elizabethís, life changed forever when I brought Mom to live with us. As a child, we had many and varied pets, but no cats. It was only after she came to live with me that Momís aversion to Elizabeth became apparent.

Life with Mom was filled with almost daily humorous scenarios, some involving cats and some not. Momís wonderful sense of humor about her dementia and my sense of humor about the cat made an otherwise sad situation bearable.

Written in a journalistic form, Me, Mom and the Cat relates these funny stories spanning the ten years my mother lived with me, as well as her inevitable decline and death in 1997.
