by Joyce Kirksey
I came from a very poor family. I was in and out of children’s homes and foster homes. I often left homes at an early age (as young as six years old). My sister, Laura, was very abusive. My father went to prison for life for murder. The assortment of neighbors I had led to me being raped in their homes. I had my first job at the age of fourteen, and I met a man named Carl. After six months of dating him, I discovered he was married. I was pregnant and sad at the loss of Carl.
