In this delightful children’s story, we follow the adventures of Timmy Gills as he spends a day away from home exploring the Great Pond, after his mother gives him permission to go.

"I am not afraid," says Timmy. But as he confronts the dangers of the pond, far from the safety of the cove where he was born, he finds he is afraid. He encounters a mysterious, scary, dark hole, rough street-fish, and even a fishhook, but he also finds caring fish willing to help.

Through it all, Timmy learns that he may not know all he thinks he knows. He realizes that he needs to study hard, and then he will be wise enough to swim the whole pond.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Mary Esther Mitchell wrote The Adventures of Timmy Gills in 1935, but she died in 1941 without ever seeing her story published. However, she left the publishing rights to her nephew’s wife, Grace Olney Mitchell. Mary Mitchell was the sister of Edward Page Mitchell, the editor-in-chief of the New York Sun, who received the famous letter from eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon asking, "Is there a Santa Claus?"

Mr. Mitchell also was a noted author of many science fiction books, most notably, The Crystal Man, published in 1973 by Doubleday & Company, Inc.

Mary Mitchell continued the literary and artistic tradition of the Mitchell family.
