Obie and the Open Door and Monkey in a Cage

This book consists of two short stories. One centers around a bird called Obie and his human friend Nellie. Obie came into Nellie’s life in a mysterious way; She was sitting on the porch one day and he came and hopped into her hand. Since then they have been best friends.
Tragedy strikes when Obie flies out the window and is unable to find his way home. Eventually, through a series of events, he finds his way to the mall, where his friend Nellie is waiting for him.
In Monkey in a Cage, Chucky has been kept in a cage that a solider built for him. But eventually he manages to escape as he gets older and stronger. When he escapes the house, Chucky decides to go look for his solider. The solider when to war and never came home. Chucky wanders confused and lonely for a time, but eventually finds another friend in uniform: a fireman.
About the Author
Catherine Antolino Mervyn is a native Italian who immigrated to America with her mother at age thirteen. She served in the U.S. Military for two years during WWII. Mrs. Mervyn received a B.S. degree in Education from Ohio State University and an M.A. degree in Education from California Lutheran University. She taught in elementary schools in Ohio, New Mexico, and California. Her first book, A Tower in the Valley: The History of Santa Clara Church, was published in 1989, and Historic Moments with California Federation of Women’s Clubs was published in 1998. The Replication of the Father Serra Statue, a Volunteer Community Project, was published in 2002. She has published two children’s books, Sammy, Pepe and Mumbo-Jumbo and A Lesson from a Tree.
