Poems from the Heart
by Eugene Johnson

I am eighty-six years old and started writing at the age of eighty-five. My memories include living through sixteen presidents and meeting wonderful people of all ages. While I was in the hospital at an early age, Charles Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic. I also saw the first talking movie, The Jazz Singer, with Al Jolson, in Seattle. In Missoula I saw the first airplane to take people for rides for five dollars. I was on my dadís shoulders listening to the announcer when Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney had the long-count fight. Memories that I have make up this book.

About the Author

I was born at the Elmore Hospital in Missoula, Montana, during the depression. My father was a lumberjack and a blacksmith, and my mother was a housewife. I went to grade school in a one-room schoolhouse with Flathead Indians and white children in Evaro, Montana. I drove my Model-A Ford to Missoula County High School, fifteen miles from home.

I served in the Army in World War II in the South Pacific, Philippine Invasion, on to Okinawa and Korea. I then became a barber in 1947 in Salt Lake City. I now have bone cancer and while in pain, something woke me up and told me to write a poem. ďAngelsĒ was my first. This is a product of the rest.
