Under the Crescent Moon was born from research Michele Marrano did on the Nazi Holocaust that claimed her German relatives. Taken by the humanity and civility concentration camp members showed toward one another, she was driven to retell the story in a more current setting, replacing Nazi Germany with Taliban-run Afghanistan. Twelve chapters were written prior to the attacks of September 11, 2000, when most of us had yet to learn of the Taliban.

In this diary of an American survivor, Marrano’s alter ego and narrator, a transportation manager named Michele Hoffman, owes her survival to the sisterhood that develops between herself, a rock-and-roll superstar, and a business executive as they cope with the harshness of prison life and the precariousness of their survival. Under the Crescent Moon is both poignant and hopeful in its depiction of the compassion and humor that flourishes under dire circumstances.
